Woody Vašulka (1937-2019), obituary
“Last year saw the opening of the Vašulka Kitchen Brno, a space dedicated to the legacy of Woody and Steina Vašulka in the Moravian capital. Professor Tomáš Ruller is one of its co-founders: “I believe I am not exaggerating when I say that just like musicians have their Leoš Janáček, architects their Miese van der Rohe and geneticist their Johan Gregor Mendel, we artists have Woody Vašulka, who made a mark in the history of world art and his legacy is finally being recognised also in his hometown of Brno.”

“They [the Vašulkas] plunged with enthusiasm into the discovery of the new medium of video, an uncharted, fluid and free territory with utopian promises, beckoning all adventurous natures to explore properly. They took this survey of the electronic media seriously, with almost scientific piety and consistency, even though they sometimes hinted in interviews that they had actually just been playing with those devices all their lives. Anyway, it would be more fitting if we called them prospectors rather than video pioneers … After the news of Woody's death, there was a wave of condolence on social networks connecting hundreds of artists (almost) all over the world, and it was touching to see how many of those from several generations feel directly or indirectly indebted to Vašulka.”
