Vašulka Mediascape
Steina & Woody Vašulka, Vašulka Video: Steina (1978, 28:50)
Steina presents and talks about the making of various projects from the 1970s, including Violin Power (1969-78), Flux (1977), From Cheektowaga to Tonawanda (1975), and Sound & Fury (1975). This is one of the 6 programs produced by WNED in Buffalo, and the Vašulkas as part of an artist residency. These projects for local public television demonstrate the Vašulkas’ commitment to sharing information about their media art work with the analog video signal and special tools that allow them to pursue specific interests. In this program Steina speaks about using a sound device, here her violin, to affect the video image, and her use of other machines (turntable, car) to control the camera, in a body of work she refers to as Machine Vision. Tools used include the Hearn 4-Zone Colorizer (Bill Hearn); various machines (built by Woody); Flip Flop Switcher (George Brown); Rutt/Etra Scan Processor (Steve Rutt and Bill Etra).
